Let’s Talk Training is the training operating arm of established mental health provider Harmless. The service delivers a range of specialist CPD accredited and bespoke training UK wide, including externally accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).

We deliver courses on the topics of Self harm, Mental health & Suicide prevention. Our training will encourage you to explore your awareness, develop an understanding of the key issues faced by people in distress and by the services that these individuals come into contact with. We will identify the impact that we, as service providers, can potentially have upon the health, well being and recovery of those in distress and promote skills that can used in intervention as well as develop effective signposting skills.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Earlier this week I was fortunate enough to be delivering my first Youth Mental Health First Aid Course. This is a fantastic engaging course providing lots of relevant information and statistics.

  • One in ten young people experience a mental health issue at any one time.
  • Seven are likely to have been bullied
  • Six may be self harming
  • Rates of depression and anxiety have increased 70% in the past 25 years.
  • About 25% young people self harm on one occasion
  • 10% of suicides in the UK are by those aged 15 – 24.

Many young children are not getting the help they need. With this training key figures such as front line workers, teachers, class room assistants, carers and youth  workers  who are often in the best position to identify a young person who is struggling can learn how best to help and support these young people.

Youth Mental Health first Aid (MHFA) courses are for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8 – 18.

On this course you will learn how to preserve life, prevent deterioration of any injury or illness, promote healing and recovery and provide comfort to the ill and injured.

This course will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issues from getting worse.

This course does not teach you to be a therapist – but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond.

This course gives you the tools to have the conversation that help to empower you to create a mentally healthy environment to support young people.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (Youth MHFA) is an internationally recognised educational training course. Youth MHFA is the help given to a young person experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. MHFA is designed to teach people how to identify, understand and help a young person who may be developing a mental health issue. In the same way we learn physical first aid, Youth MHFA teaches how to recognise those crucial warning signs and respond appropriately to signs of emotional and mental ill health. By completing this course it will develop yours skills, abilities and confidence in being able to support individuals with a range of mental health conditions.

Youth MHFA is a course aimed at people who come into contact with young people aged 8 to 18. The 2 day workshop will be delivered by a fully trained certified MHFA Trainer.

Course Aims:

  • Preserve life
  • Prevent deterioration of any injury or illness
  • Promote healing and recovery
  • Provide comfort to the ill or injured.

This course is split into 4 manageable chunks, these are:

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid

  • Preserve life where a young person may be a danger to themselves or others.
  • Provide help to prevent the emotional or mental health problem developing into a more serious state

  • Raise awareness of mental health issues in the community
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination.

This role will be ideal for those who have recently qualified to become MHFA instructors.

DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver MHFA training on behalf of Harmless and its associated projects to external parties including (but not limited to) external organisations, school, professionals and carers.
  • A willingness to offer personal experience during training delivery by sharing own experiences of distress (and/or self harm) and recovery (in line with Harmless’ service user led ethos)
  • A willingness to travel (nationwide) with occasional overnight stay as required.
  • Represent Harmless in a professional manner at all times
  • Deliver training against agreed learning outcomes
  • Develop and maintain training content in line with changes in the field and to the highest standard upon negotiation with the Harmless Management Team
  • Maintain excellent professional relationships with delegates and/or organisations with a view to secure future training opportunities
  • Be an integral part of the booking process with support from the administration team
  • To ensure all data collection tools are used to monitor and improve upon training delivery
  • Ensure training materials are appropriate for delegates requirements
  • Report to Harmless management regularly about the progress of training and address any issues that may arise, recording relevant statistics where required.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
15hrs CPD

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.

  Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

CPD Accredited

Our two day Adult MHFA course is an internationally recognised course. After taking it, you will be able to:

  • Recognise the symptoms of mental health issues
  • Provide initial help
  • Guide a person towards appropriate professional help

 MHFA won’t teach you how to be a therapist, but once you’ve completed the two day course you will be able to say you’re a Mental Health First Aider.

Prevention is better than cure – looking out for our next generations

We are all aware of the old saying ‘prevention is better than cure’. If we feel we are coming down with a cold, or have the start of a headache, we will intervene early to hopefully prevent it.

Within every school in the UK there is a qualified first aider to hand, in case of physical illness or injury. There is a preventative measure in place should young people need physical first aid help during their time in the learning environment. Their wellbeing and safety is very much considered in this regards. There are effective interventions and systems in place that can be utilised quickly and easily.

Although there have been some positive changes in recent years, when it comes to mental health, this is more often than not ignored. It is the invisible illness with so much uncertainty and negativity still surrounding it.

How often do we come across mental health first aiders in schools?

Unfortunately, not very often at all.

Although we would like to have the same preventative measures applied to mental health as we have in place for physical health, this frustratingly is not the case.

From a recent article from Dr David A Lee, Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist, discussing the importance of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) in schools, states;

‘it is fundamental that early warning signs of mental health are detected at an early rate in children and adolescents so that prompt action can be taken to ensure helpful support and appropriate treatment. Unfortunately, this is not our reality at present’

This really does bring to the forefront that early intervention is what is needed. We need to be proactive, not reactive.

It is stated within the same article that;

‘5% of adolescents suffer from depression at any one time and 20% will experience depressive symptoms by the time they enter childhood. To add to this, approximately 10-15% of children or adolescents have one or more diagnosable anxiety disorder.’

It is also discussed that eating disorders are on the increase, particularly in young females.

Why as a society are we not more concerned about the rise of mental health issues in our young people?

Emotional wellbeing should be at the forefront when supporting young people. Mental health training should be provided for frontline workers supporting and working with children and adolescents.

Anyone can be trained in mental health and anyone can respond to those in distress.

Why should we let individuals get to such high levels of distress, before we step in, when we all know, and likely use that famous saying ‘prevention is better that cure’

By having trained staff within each and every school, caregivers can detect warning signs of possible mental ill health and ensure that early intervention is implemented. This can be in the form of signposting, liaising with specialists in the field, seeking appropriate professional help, such as psychological treatments, or referring on to a safeguarding lead or pastoral support. While doing so, it is vital we work collaboratively with the individual and empower them to make their own decisions about their needs and wants.

Finally, Dr David Lee goes onto state;

While MHFA is still very much in its infancy as a concept, it offers a unique solution to the needs of schools and colleges in terms of cultivating pupil wellbeing and positive mental health, and to the early recognition of mental health problems’

Young people’s mental health care is ‘inadequate’ according to specialist nurses

According to a survey of 631 workers in children and adolescent services, 43% said things were getting worse.  The poll was carried out by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) for the Guardian newspaper.

Mental health care nurses say they’re worried that the rationing of access to care and shortage of beds are so bad that young people risk harming, or even killing themselves. 

Stacey, which isn’t her real name, is a nurse who works on an acute ward for people with severe and enduring mental illness stated, “Mental health staff should get more training and that more specialist units are needed, especially outside bigger towns and cities.”
