Shaking off the negativity…

At Harmless we are all about promoting hope, recovery and positivity. However, during my time here I have noticed that negativity starts even when I tell a stranger my job role.

I have found many people don’t know how to respond to my job role and it normally creates one of two reactions. Mainly people become uncomfortable and feel the need to change the subject but also sometimes it can start a conversation similar to 101 questions. It’s not uncommon for me to hear responses such as…

“Well…good for you.”

Or…

“Gosh that must be depressing!”

and…

“I don’t know how you do that!”

 

The thing is my job isn’t depressing, it isn’t all doom and gloom. The problem is when you mention topics like Self harm, Suicide and Mental health the stigma attached to them holds such a negative picture.

There is a really wise saying…

It is all about the point of view, some people see the positive in a situation and others see the negative. For the majority of us negativity is often the first ‘go to’ in any situation. However, the problem is if we are always seeing the glass as half empty how will ever help others to see it as half full?

I don’t see my job as a chore, I don’t see it as a burden. My job brings hope, hope for something more, hope for something better. When someone is diagnosed with cancer we feel bad about it, sure, but we also embed hope. Why can’t this be the same for someone who self harms or for someone with a mental health condition?  Negativity only reinforces stigma positivity promotes hope, it provides options.

So next time you hear about Self harm, Suicide or Mental Health shake off your negativity and remember it isn’t all doom and gloom recovery is possible, hope is possible, there are options!
